At least 64 people lost their lives in a security raid cracking down on the organized crime group in Rio de Janeiro's northern districts - the largest and deadliest raid in the Brazilian state's past.

Four police officers were included in the fatalities during Operation Containment in the communities of Alemão and Penha, government representatives stated. Over 80 individuals were detained.

Intense confrontations commenced when approximately 2,500 law enforcement officers entered the area on the morning of the operation. The Red Command countered with armed resistance, burning barricades and launching explosives via unmanned aircraft, officials confirmed.

The International human rights organization expressed being "shocked" by the security action, calling for "immediate and thorough inquiries".

Mission Consequences

The informal settlements near Rio's airport is considered to be the main base of among the nation's strongest criminal organizations.

State officials said at least 50 of those killed were "identified by authorities as alleged offenders".

Numerous individuals were wounded, including civilians caught in the crossfire.

Community Response

Residents have likened the mountainous region - home to about 300,000 individuals - to a "war zone" since the operation began.
