Bolsonaro has been taken into custody after authorities found he posed a definite escape threat while under domestic detention.

The ex-president was sentenced of planning a government overthrow in the ninth month and sentenced more than a 27-year term in prison, but he was staying under home detention pending appeals.

Top Judicial Official Justice Moraes said the move to detain the 70-year-old politician was a precautionary step after recent developments came to light.

This encompassed seeking to disable his ankle monitor and a call for a demonstration that could "allow for a chance to flee".

Judicial Records Show Escape Risks

In a filing authorising the arrest, Justice Moraes said information from the centre monitoring the former president's confinement suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the electronic ankle bracelet to ensure success in his flight.

This, it said, would be made easier by the disorder caused by the protest called by his offspring.

His son, his son Flávio, who holds office as a congressional representative, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on Saturday evening.

The senator wrote on social media on last Friday: "Are you going to fight for your homeland, or see it all from your mobile device there on your sofa? I invite you to struggle with us."

He said the demonstration would be so supporters could "pray for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our land."

Embassy Asylum Concerns

Part of the judge's ruling was the possibility of his "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the investigations revealed a background of organizing to ask for protection through a consular facility", a statement said.

The judicial paperwork emphasizes that the US embassy in the national capital, Brasilia, is situated around approximately 13 kilometers from Bolsonaro's home.

Worldwide Consequences

Bolsonaro's legal woes have provoked anger from fellow conservative nationalist United States President President Trump, causing him to implement a 50% tariff on imports of Brazilian goods.

He is being detained in a federal law enforcement building in Brasilia and will undergo a custody hearing on Sunday.

Recent Legal Requests

It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to permit him to serve his whole jail sentence under house arrest, with digital surveillance.

They also petitioned that Bolsonaro be authorized to leave his home for healthcare, saying he required ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.

Context of Sentencing

Bolsonaro was convicted of heading a conspiracy aimed at retaining his authority after he failed to win the national vote to his political opponent, President Lula.

High Court judges said that he was aware of a scheme which included plans to assassinate his opponent and his vice-presidential running mate, Alckmin, and to detain and kill the presiding judge - the Supreme Court justice who has been managing the former president's case.

The scheme was prevented because it didn't receive the endorsement of the army and air force commanders. Lula was took office without issue on the first day of 2023.

But a following week, on January 8th, numerous his backers invaded and destroyed public facilities in the federal district, Brazil's capital.

The security forces stepped in and around approximately 1,500 persons were taken into custody.

The magistrates found that the demonstrators had been incited by Bolsonaro whose scheme, they said, was for the country's army to intervene, restore order and bring him back to power.

At the period, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the over 27-year sentence "absurdly excessive.

He was also barred from campaigning for office until 2060 - eight years after the end of his sentence.

The ex-leader called the legal proceedings a political persecution and said it was aimed at blocking him participating in the 2026 national vote.
