Ceramic Gift, Any Takers? Meloni to Sell World Leaders' Gifts for Good Cause

Relinquishing unneeded presents can be considered slightly impolite – except if it's done the right way.

A Charitable Clear-Out

The Italian premier, Giorgia Meloni, plans to auction an estimated 270 gifts given to her by international figures while abroad. The diverse haul reportedly features gifts including a chainsaw-wielding statuette of Argentinian president Javier Milei and a pair of blue python skin shoes with gilded heels.

These items, collectively, are worth an estimated €800,000. The plan is to put up for sale to the highest bidder by a Rome-based auction firm. An exact timeline is yet to be set, but the aim is to conduct the sale before Christmas, with the proceeds going to a selection of charitable causes.

Palazzo Chigi Holdings

These gifts are said to be kept in a secure area on the third floor of the government headquarters. Reports indicate that Meloni is also planning to auction off gifts given to her preceding prime ministers that have been stored away indefinitely.

The full gift list remains disclosed, but some insight was gleaned earlier this year when a detailed register of official presents was reviewed by officials. The discussion raised if a rule restricting expensive presents was being honored. Legally, a prime minister is not permitted to keep presents exceeding €300.

An International Array of Presents

The collection includes:

  • A silk accessory from the Albanian prime minister, reportedly given to Meloni for her birthday during a meeting abroad.
  • A traditional Kerala dress from India's prime minister.
  • A box of jewellery from the Slovakian president.
  • A porcelain tea set and a selection of wines from Hungary's leader.
  • A ceramic bowl from the former US president.
  • A electronic pad from the Ukrainian president.
  • Paintings from the Moldovan government.
  • Additional objects including makeup, a skateboard, and numerous carpets received during trips to Libya and other Arab nations.
"Perhaps the strangest gifts were the Milei figurine and the exotic footwear," reports suggest.

Political Backdrop

Supporters have applauded Meloni, particularly from her own political sphere, with building relationships with global statesmen and re-establishing Italy as a prominent force on the global scene once again.

The forthcoming sale represents a novel approach to deal with the protocol gifts that are collected during a time in office.
