The Premier Album of 2025: Rosalía's Lux Takes the Premier Position.

Initially, Lux may look closer to a challenging academic examination rather than the latest popular music project by an artist who just had a previous single featured a global K-pop icon. Broken into four distinct parts and sung in thirteen languages, it is a dizzying orchestral-influenced work exploring feminine mystery, spiritual transcendence, and physical change, often through the lens of different saintly figures. The end of a romance—a theme treated with raw openness elsewhere—soars upwards here, carried by the constant presence of a major symphony orchestra and contributions from a Pulitzer-winning composer among a vast list of collaborators. Its sheer audacity alone makes the work of other pop stars look rather laughable.

Transcending Scholarly Pretense

The fact that this album manages to escape dry intellectual chin-stroking feels almost a miracle, and full praise going to Rosalía. While it's not the first time project to alchemize historical sounds with modern styles, its stakes feel far greater here, and the balancing act more pronounced. The element that truly raises her fourth release, outside of its multilayered melodies, rich compositions, and inherent theatricality, is a core sense of fun. Similar to the legendary artist at her height, you find a captivating quality to the vocalist's voice which sweeps you up in its whirlwind. Even when she's breaking your heart in two, the listener nevertheless desire to stay right there for the ride.

A Prime Moment of Joy

This exuberant spirit shines clearly on the stirring piano-led song about a saint. It bathes in a string-drenched melancholy for more than four moments. Suddenly, all the music drops silent, to reveal we hear a gleeful laugh and a declaration before a comically exaggerated string crescendo crashes down with cartoonish impact. The song then segues to the frenetic single driven by racing orchestration, an imposing choir, and a cameo role from the artist Björk.

"The magic of this album is that you rarely quite know—or even want to know—where it will go to next."

Almost every track concludes in a completely distinct point from where it started. A track examines the fleeting trappings of fame over a delicate orchestration before collapsing into electronic chaos. Another, a cut echoing her previous trap-infused style starts out moody and sinister, with prowling vocals, until fluttering traditional rhythms and an angelic chorus enter to soften its jagged edges.

The Bridge Of Art & Pop

Another crucial achievement on the album involves straddling the line of bold innovation and broad appeal. It is little surprise that the album has become her highest-charting work to break into the Top 5 of major markets: at its core a suite of utterly catchy pop songs. A song sung entirely in English builds on a refrain that feels to collect more and more nagging hooks as it spirals skyward. That feat is repeated by another expansive track that grows and contracts, weaving layered melodies like a complex tapestry.

  • A waltz-like song seduces via its playful, theatrical drama and a chant-along chorus.
  • Lyrically, it shares the pop culture honesty of contemporary breakup anthems, eviscerating an ex- lover labeled an "psychological bully".
  • Throughout the album, the singing carry a painted-on smile, akin to a storybook figure hiding a knife: "Gold medal in being a scoundrel / You have the podium of letdown."

An Opulent Banquet for the Soul

Lux represents pop on a maximalist scale, a hungry reach for capital-A Art amid of looming artificial sameness. It rejects solipsism for glorious transcendence, crafting a dramatic drama that skillfully manages its own built-in excess. It is a deep source of hidden treasure that requires time to fully mine but doesn't feels like hard work. While other big releases of 2025 felt like feasting on meal, this record is a lavish banquet at which the characters around it, perhaps tipsy on holy wine, flutter from conversations about ancient figures, the galvanizing feeling of heartbreaking grief, and shared gossip about useless partners. In essence, it's a modern-day musical from music's truly endlessly inventive practitioner.
